I just finished a VISTA project and have moved on to a new one - and yes, I seriously want people to donate to my new project as my one and only birthday present - so please! For the kids!

My birthday is 2 October. I like people to show that they care about me - maybe a "Happy Birthday" text message or wall post or something - but I haven't cared about parties or presents since I was a kid. However, a couple of people have been asking me what I want this year because they feel an overwhelming need to get me something. I really didn't want anything until I learned about this:

So, Logan City School District Foundation:
http://www.loganschoolsfoundation.org/

supports this program called PAWS (Pursuing Academics With Success). Any student who is below grade-level in literacy has a volunteer come and read with them for 30 minutes a day, at least twice a week, for 30 weeks. Volunteers include middle/high/college/vocational students, senior citizens, stay-at-home mothers, and other professionals. In addition to helping (mostly low income and immigrant) children with pronunciation, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and life skills, these volunteers also act as mentors and role-models. The program has been shown to be effective at increasing literacy (by 2.5 grade levels/ year) and reducing behavior problems.

Anyways, volunteer tutors (some as young as 10 or 11 years old) are eligible for a scholarship of $40 to $775 depending on the number of hours they volunteer. The scholarship can be used for any worthy post-secondary opportunity - college, vocational school, or service projects like PeaceCorps, Americorps, LanguageCorps, or missionary work. They are also open to giving the scholarship to a beneficiary (for example, if a grandparent wanted to give it to a grandchild). The scholarship cannot be accessed until the recipient is 18 years old and has graduated from high school/ received a GED, and until then, the recipient is given access to financial literacy and other savings/scholarship information.

This year, the donors and organizations who usually support PAWS scholarships have not been able to help, so LCSDF is asking the community for help. For anyone (person, group, or business) that sends in a donation of $250 or more, they will receive:

A receipt for their fully tax-deductible donation
A thank you letter (more below)
A picture of a beneficiary
A major mention when the year's recipients are announced (unless you want to remain anonymous).

Additionally, a LOCAL business who donates can ask to have the picture taken at their business location.

For those who donate anything less than $250 (even $1 helps), they will receive:

A receipt for their fully tax-deductible donation
A thank you letter (more below)
A minor mention when the year's recipients are announced (unless you want to remain anonymous).

NOW HERE'S THE REALLY COOL PART:

Anyone who donates can "NAME" their scholarship. For example, if you own Krazy Hair Salon, you can donate a $250 "Krazy Hair Salon PAWS Scholarship."

IN MY CASE, I WANT A DONATION OF WHATEVER YOU CAN SPARE TO THE "HAPPY BIRTHDAY Jennifer  "Star" Freylehr PAWS SCHOLARSHIP."

Isn't that cool? I'm giving out a scholarship!

You can also do other stuff like, "Happy Mother's Day [Name of Mother] PAWS Scholarship" or "I've always secretly loved you [Name] PAWS Scholarship" - anything that can be published in a newspaper in a small, highly religious town.

OKAY, SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY - HOW DO I DONATE?

You can mail a check to:

In the comment line, write: Happy Birthday, Jennifer "Star" Freylehr PAWS Scholarship

Be sure to include a small letter saying that it is a donation for a PAWS scholarship in the name of Jennifer "Star" Freylehr. If you wish to remain anonymous, add that too.

If you want to donate in the name of someone or something else, that's also cool. Just post a comment so I can thank you.

Alternatively, you can walk a check or cash in to the same address if you live nearby:
Logan City School District, 101 West Center, Logan, UT 84321

or you can call to ask for alternatives. I'm not sure they can do credit or debit cards.

Anyways, PLEASE.... I know we are poor VISTA's - but we can do $1!
