I am currently serving in New York and planning to move to DC after my service is done in August. I know its far away, but I just wanted to begin checking out my options and am not sure where to start. How can I contact Alum in DC?

The DC Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums has a blog, Facebook and Twitter accounts:

Read up on non-competitive eligibility if you think that you may want to apply for jobs in the Federal government: /system/files/legacy/37/LifeAfterVISTA/Non-Competitive_Eligibility_Frequently_Asked_Questions.pdf

Also along those lines, there's a group in DC that would be great for using your NCE for networking if you're ever down here physically (Bolt/Megabus + couch surfing with friends or staying at the HI Hostel is pretty affordable.) Young Government Leaders: http://younggov.org/ ... They have a NYC chapter, a DC chapter and a couple chapters close to DC like Bethesda and Baltimore.

One thing to keep in mind is that living in DC can be pretty expensive. In a lot of ways I've seen that it's on par with or worse than the expenses of my friends who live in NYC, if you can believe that. There are also a lot of neighborhoods that are having gentrification pains that wouldn't be immediately obvious on first sight when trying to find a place to live so asking for advice from people in the know can be really helpful.

Good luck!
