Alumni in NYC/Long Island?

I've been on the V Cafe for months and was not aware that this forum existed, haha! So let me introduce myself: my name is Tara Glynn, I served two terms, one as a VISTA and one as a VISTA Leader, in Tallahassee, FL, with the Florida Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA Initiative from 2007-2009. In 2009 I moved to Nassau County, Long Island, NY to attend law school. However I've found it quite difficult to find alumni in the area, which is surprising to me because I figured, what with being so close to NYC, I would find plenty. I have tried AmeriCorps*Alums, and they have had a few events. However they've all been in NYC and all cost money to attend, which as an AmeriCorps*Alum and law student, I simply cannot afford.

So I'm just looking for AmeriCorps in the area, alum or not actually. Just people to connect with, network with, and try and create a new home for myself here. If anyone here is in the area, or if anyone has some advice on how to find and network with alums in the area, I would really appreciate it. :-)

Hi Tara,
I just signed on to the VISTA website and saw your posting....Alumni in NYC/Long Island.

I served as a VISTA volunteer from 1973-4 in Colorado. I am originally from L.I. and I'm back since 1974.

If you would like to chat, my email address is shs925@aol.com

Hi Ellen,
What did you do in VISTA in DENVER? I'm wondering if our project continued. I worked with the Dept of Institutions, developing teacher training programs who worked with developmentally disabled.

Where in Rockville Center did you grow up?
I grew up in Searingtown (near New Hyde Park). I circled back to LI (over the years) after my VISTA service.

VISTA was one of the best experiences of my life....it certainly catapaulted my career when the job market was slim back in the mid 70's!!!

What are you doing in MD today?

Susan, worked at Colorado Rural Legal Services, providing support for immigration matters around the state.

Hamilton St. Haven't been back, folks moved ages ago, but I am in touch with South Side H.S. alums.

VISTA was great experience for me, first 'lawyer' job out of law school. Ended up in DC, at ICC (railroad regulation!), and retired now in DC 'exurb.' You?

Hi Tara,
I've been out of VISTA for so long (1973-1974). I've remained in contact with two of my VISTA project-mates and have actually seen them quite a few times over the past 35 years. However, we didn't have a "VISTA" bond, only friendship....unfortunately. I really would have like to hear about the continuity of my project in Denver.

Where do you go to law school? I'd be happy to talk to you and help you network with people in this area.

Hi Susan,

I've actually maintained pretty good contact with my site in FL. I know a lot of members on facebook and almost all the organizations I worked with are on facebook or online so I can keep up with them and see how they are doing. What's sad for me is they're in FL and I'm in NY. I'm originally from NY (Albany area) and I love NY, but I miss being around AmeriCorps people and volunteer oriented people. Being in law school I haven't had a lot of time to try and find volunteer opportunities (though through my summer internship I landed one for this Thursday! Very excited), so its been hard. All the AmeriCorps*Alum alerts and events in the area sound great but often cost money to attend and seeing as I went straight from VISTA to Law school...money is not something I have to spare.

I'm attending Hofstra University School of Law in Hempstead. I just completed my first year and I really love it so far.

Hi Tara
I just perused these emails for the first time and read yours.  I'm a VISTA alum living in Suffolk County.  You must be graduating from Hofstra Law soon.  Any job prospects?  (It's a tough market.)
I retired about 16 months ago from the practice of law.  I spent my career based in Suffolk County although I started out in the Brooklyn DA's office and clerked for a federal judge in Manhattan before making the big move.
I was a VISTA in Madison County, Alabama (June '68 to August '69).  Didn't go to law school until after VISTA.
While I'm not in a position to hire anyone, I may be able to point you in some possible directions.  Any questions?
