About This Position:

The Janitor is responsible for the janitorial and housekeeping duties in one or more single room occupancy (SRO) hotels. This position ensures the cleanliness, habitability, and upkeep of assigned building(s).


THC is a non-profit housing, support services, legal, and advocacy organization. THC provides

Job Duties*:

  • Sweeping, vacuuming and mopping of buildings

  • Removing trash frequently including, composting, and recycling

  • Cleaning and stocking communal bathrooms

  • Dusting and cleaning all common areas

  • Removing small and large debris and assisting with "turnovers" of vacated units

  • Assisting with pest control measures

  • Painting, buffing, stripping and waxing


A successful candidate will possess the following:

  • High School degree or equivalent preferred.

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in janitorial work strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of janitorial practices and procedures, including sanitation.

  • Experience working effectively with diverse, low-income, homeless and/or formerly homeless population strongly preferred.


This is an full-time (40 hours/week) position Monday-Friday 8am-4pm

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently and alternatingly is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle, hold, grasp, and feel; reach with hands and arms; talk; and hear. The employee frequently is required to climb stairs; stoop; kneel; crouch; crawl; push; and pull. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. This position requires the frequent use of portable power and hand tools, plumbing tools, and flooring materials. This position requires the occasional use of common janitorial tools and equipment. Travel throughout San Francisco frequently is required. 



THC worksites are located in densely populated urban environments in which there is a great deal of activity. The majority of THC’s worksites are in Single Room Occupancy residential hotels and community drop-in centers. Like many urban areas, the communities with which THC works face challenges such as poverty, trauma, untreated mental health disabilities, active substance use, and illegal activity. THC works to empower its clients and strengthen the communities that face these challenges. 


While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, be in high or precarious places, experience a risk of electrical shock, and be exposed to toxic or caustic fumes or chemicals, blood, bodily fluids, and pests. The employee frequently may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally high.
